Careers at DownBallot

We win local elections.

Our company works exclusively with downballot candidates — people running for local governments, state legislatures, and low-profile statewide office.

We want people on our team who are ready to get their hands dirty and do whatever it takes to put a Democrat in every office.

Here's our hypothesis:

Local races deserve serious infrastructure.

We work with single parents, PTA presidents, and people working three jobs while advocating for their neighborhoods.

These candidates — from city council to state senate — need the same fundraising, digital, and practical strategy that Congressional and statewide campaigns win with.

Local fundraising
$231,112
raised in one winning city council campaign’s first three months
Doors knocked
200,000+
to secure a majority vote landslide in an "unwinnable" race
Campaign victories
Dozens
of competitive primaries won for progressive Democrats

Here's how we do it:

We’re people who care about the details.

A fundraising plan, a filing deadline, a message to voters: every detail matters on a small campaign. Good work here keeps the next step clear for busy candidates and staff.

  1. 01 Campaign notes

    Scalable risks

We work for a lot people without a lot of budget. We use tech and systems to scale, and we take risks to innovate what campaigns look like.

  2. 02 Campaign notes

    Be dependable

In the 2026 cycle, 80% of our candidates worked a full time job while running for office. Nobody has the resources for us to mess up, so we work together to keep the quality of work product top-tier.

  3. 03 Campaign notes

    Ear to the ground

Our team keeps the candidate, the district, and the campaign’s real constraints in view. Clients count on us for the political instincts we’ve earned from years of work on campaigns.

Here's where we do it:

Remote, always.

Our team works across the country, and we do it intentionally. We communicate explicitly, trust people to own their work, and show up for one another during crunch time.

DownBallot comes together for occasional in-person workshops or socials in the DC area — they’re always optional, but we love face time when we can get it!

  • Commitment 01

    Trust over surveillance

We hire thoughtful people, share the destination, and give them room to own the work.

  • Commitment 02

    Context over guesswork

Clear priorities, documented decisions, and candid communication keep our team moving together.

  • Commitment 03

    People over urgency

Campaigns are intense. Respect, care, and accessibility are part of how we deliver.

Here's what we offer:

Benefits that make the worst days worth it.

Benefits vary between contractors and employees but the bottom line remains the same: DownBallot supports its people.

01

Above-market pay

Politics doesn't pay what it should. DownBallot does. We're committed to paying our employees 125% the market wage at comparable employers.

02

Health and wellness

We offer health insurance, HSA benefits, and bike share memberships in the DC area. At high-stress times, get dinner delivered on us.

03

Time away

DownBallot gives every employee unlimited paid time off. No asterisks. And when you take time off, the whole team steps in to cover it.

04

Growth and future

We care about training the next generation of people running this profession. We work to train you, and if you want a job on a campaign, we'll find you one.

Here’s why we do it:

We stick to our values, even when it's hard.

Our values are why we do this work. We are explicitly anti-racist, radically feminist, and committed to universal accessibility. We are unabashedly progressive, and we'll always elect a Democrat if a Republican can threaten to win.

We believe in liberation for workers, people of color, women, trans, queer, and intersex people, and neurodivergent, chronically ill, and disabled people. These commitments shape how we treat one another, choose our work, and make decisions.

  • ✓

    Anti-racist in practice

We examine power, challenge racist systems, and make our commitments visible in decisions and daily work.

  • ✓

    Radically feminist

We reject patriarchal norms and support the full agency, safety, leadership, and liberation of men, women, and queer people.

  • ✓

    Universally accessible

We design communication, tools, and collaboration to be accessible by default.

Bring your perspective

Campaigns are stronger when more voices shape the work.

DownBallot welcomes applicants across backgrounds and experiences. If a role speaks to your skills but your path does not match every bullet, we still encourage you to apply.
